Stairway to heaven?
This dance began with a chance remark from Janine; she had thought about dancing to the legendary Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven. What do the words mean? Does anyone know? Unlikely, but the point is the mood and the imagination. This is a very long track, and (we ask to be forgiven!) it was shortened slightly for our choreography. The titles of our dances always emerge sooner or later. "Stairway" seemed to fall short until Mako translated the title into Japanese: she wrote Ten Goku at lightning speed .. East met West in Japanese characters:
The quiet, reflective, even melancholy first episode is a study in shimmying, with one leg straight. It is overlaid with dramatic arm and hand movements. The momentum picks up in the final, wild, instrumental cadenza.
We incorporate a brief version of the trance dance move, a tannoura spin, stepping spins and chest shimmies, eventually winding down into a break, circles spiralling up to face the back, arms and hands reach up to heaven ... and we finish, still shimmying...
With regard to costuming, sea colours provided a theme that took on a life of its own. We each had our own individual costume, unifying with floaty turquoise and blue to achieve the effect of sunlight through water.
If there is a stairway to heaven, it's bound to be a spiral stairway.
